Col. William H. S. Burgwyn was the brother of Col. Henry K. Burgwyn who was killed at Gettysburg while leading the 26th North Carolina Infantry.

Col. Waddell also fought for the Confederacy and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Third Cavalry, Forty-first North Carolina Regiment.
