Map. MAP OF THE ST. JOHN [sic] RIVER FROM ITS MOUTH TO LAKE MONROE By D. G. Brinton. . Original folding map from D. G. Brinton's A GUIDE-BOOK OF FLORIDA AND THE SOUTH, FOR TOURISTS, INVALIDS, AND EMIGRANTS (Philadelphia, 1869).

This rare and important work was later reprinted as part of the Bicentennial Floridiana facsimile series. The map shows creases where folded, some slight separation along top crease. Measures 5 x 12 inches. Scale: 10 miles to the inch. Lithographed by "E. Herline Lith 630 Chestnut St. Phila."

Dr. Daniel Garrison Brinton was an American archaeologist and ethnologist. During the Civil War he was assigned as surgeon-in-chief of division, Eleventh Corps, Army of the Potomac. The doctor was on friendly, almost intimate, terms with Grant and was also well acquainted with Sheridan, Rosecrans, McPherson, and Halleck.

He had occasion to see Lincoln while he was in Washington. He was present at a number of historic engagements, including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and was the author of numerous books.
