John Archdale was the only Quaker governor of the Carolinas. He was distinguished for his constant effort to secure religious liberty for all Protestants. He was also the author of an important early account of the colony, "A new description of that fertile and pleasant province of Carolina : with a brief account of its discovery and settling, and the government thereof to this time ..." (London, 1707).
