Chromographed postcard. CONFEDERATE FLAG. Dimensions are 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Depicts a Confederate soldier waving the Confederate battle flag with cemetery stones in the background.

Reads: "Furl that Banner! furl it sadly. / Once Ten thousand hailed it gladly! / And Ten Thousands wildly, madly, / Swore it should / forever wave; / Swore that foeman's / Sword should never / Hearts like theirs entwined dissever, / Till that Flag should float forever / O'er their freedom or their grave."

This card was printed in Germany in the early 1900s and was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King & Queen. Card is addressed to a recipient in Richmond, Virginia in a period hand, but has not postal markings. The card has two small holes in opposite corners and some very minor edge wear.

Raphael Tuck & Sons was started in the City of London in October 1866. Their business was one of the most well known in the 'postcard boom' of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Their contributions left a lasting effect on most of the artistic world.

During The Blitz of World War II, German bombs hit the company headquarters, Raphael House, and destroyed the originals for most of their series. The company never fully recovered.
