EICHER: THE CIVIL WAR IN BOOKS AN ANALYTICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, 683: "Published monthly in the interest of Confederate veterans and kindred topics, this voliminous collection spans the years during which memorializing the Confederacy transformed into celebrating the Confederacy. The CONFEDERATE VETERAN is a potpourri of biographical reminiscences, anecdotes, poetry, random thoughts, classic advertisements, and tall stories of the war from the unreconstructed Southern point of view. A huge quantity of war reminiscences and expositions exists here, much of it valuable and much of it worthless, but taken together it conveys the spirit of the Confederate soldier in a powerful way. In 1986 Broadfoot Publishing Company of Wilmington, North Carolina, published a three volume, 2387-page cumulative index to the VETERAN. (Broadfoot also republished the entire VETERAN itself, bound in cloth [both offered here]) Edited by Louis Manarin, the index makes using the publications for research purposes a joy rather than a frustration. Included in the index are suggestions on how to identify Confederate soldiers, a list of battle synonyms, a roster of Confederate military organizations by local designations and by military units, and a list of U.C.V. camps and posts."

NEVINS I, 72: "The largest collection of personal experiences, anecdotes, battle footnotes, tall tales, and biographical sketches for the Confederate side."

FREEMAN states, "Contains mines of personal narrative that have been ignored by historians."
