Butler, Ruth Lapham. A bibliographical check list of North and Middle American Indian linguistics in the Edward E. Ayer collection. Chicago: The Newberry Library, 1941.

First edition. 2 volumes. 26 cm. First edition. Volume two is without title page, as issued. Original red cloth with blue leather labels on the spines with title and rules in gilt. Spines are slightly sunned, labels have a few small scuffs, volume two is slightly cocked. A very good set. The text is in English. An essential reference.

"The present short-title check list has been compiled for the use of the reference staff of the Library and for readers who are specialists in American Indian philology. It is more necessary since the material included is so widely scattered among volumes which cannot be segregated as works strictly devoted to Indian language. Periodical articles, volumes of serial publications, glossaries and vocabularies which have appeared in books of travel and exploration, in histories and biographies are included." - Foreward.
