159. Wallis, Severn Teackle. ADDRESS OF MR. S. TEACKLE WALLIS, CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE, WITH THE REPLY OF HIS EXCELLENCY, GOVERNOR WHYTE, DELIVERED IN
THE SENATE CHAMBER, AT ANNAPOLIS, AT THE UNVEILING OF THE STATUE OF CHIEF JUSTICE TANEY, DECEMBER 10TH, 1872. Baltimore: Published by John Murphy & Co., 1872. 18 pp.

First edition. Original printed wrappers. A near fine copy with laid in advertisement for Samuel Tyler's A MEMOIR OF ROGER BROOKE TANEY. A near fine copy. The rear wrapper of the pamphlet also advertises Tyler's biography as well as other works by Jubal Early, Wade Hampton, and the author of this piece, S. Teackle Wallis. During the Civil War Wallis was a member of the House of Delegates of Maryland from Baltimore. He was considered by Federal authorities as "the leader of the band of conspirators who were known to be plotting to pass an act of secession." He was arrested in September of 1861 along with many others and imprisoned for more than fourteen months in various forts. He was released in November, 1862, without conditions and without ever being formally charged with any crime. Now that the war is over, Wallis is again active in Maryland politics, and here delivers the keynote address at the unveiling of the statue of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney.
