"For over thirty-two years at Salt Lake City "Big Dan" was an official of the picturesgue Denver And Rio Grande Western, and an outstanding figure in Rocky Mountain life. At Denver, he helped run the Denver And Salt Lake, the famed Moffat railroad over the 'top of the world.'" This copy bears a warm gift presentation by the author dated August, 1948.

On the title page in manuscript, possibly in the author's hand: "Made before the re-survey which will materially improve the report." The proposed line would have run from Hannibal to Kansas City, crossing the Missouri River at Arrow Rock. This work by Hayward is not located in the OCLC/WORLDCAT system. A rare and important work.
