As privateers and pirates, Jean and Paul Lafitte lived much of their lives outside the law, and a number of details about their lives are obscure. Jean Lafitte is credited with helping defend Louisiana from the British in the War of 1812 with his nautical raids along the Gulf of Mexico. He also greatly assisted Andrew Jackson in repulsing the British attack at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.

The folding maps depict the territorial growth of the entire United States, the Hawaiian islands, Alaska, and an extract from a map of North America by renowned 18th-century Dutch mapmaker Herman Moll.
