"Memoria presentada al Honorable Presidente de la Repblica, General Gerardo Machado, por el Secretario de Gobernacin, Comandante Rogerio Zayas Bazn, sobre construccin del Presidio Modelo." First edition. Text is in Spanish. Original printed wrappers. A near fine copy with author's presentation: "To Mr. Hank Draper, Associate Member of State Penitentiaries, Montgomery, Alabama..." [Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore, Alabama. was constructed in 1939]. Typed letter on Bazan's REPUBLICA DE CUBA - SECRETARIA DE GOBERNACION stationery loosely laid in gives a synopsis of this work in English. This is the Report presented to the President of the Republic of Cuba, General Gerardo Machado y Morales on the construction of the Penitentiary on the Isla de Pinos. The work is illustrated with 45 full page photographic plates. The Presidio Modelo was a model prison of Panopticon design which held 6000 prisoners. Most of the survivors of the rebel attacks on Moncada Barracks and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrisons, including Fidel Castro, were imprisoned there from 1953 to 1955. The prison now serves as a museum and is declared a National Monument. A rare item. OCLC: 48991220 records only one institutional holding.
