In 1864 the American government induced the Klamanth and the Modoc, two tribes living in the area of what is now south central Oregon and northern California, to give up much of their territory and settle on a reservation around Upper Klamanth Lake. Mrs. Louisa Boddy's claim for damages stemmed from depredations committed on private settlers by Indians immediately after the first engagement in the Modoc Indian War.
